The Road Safety Crew is comprised of individuals who are committed to the daily support of guiding and directing more than 300 Riders from Toronto to Montreal. The Road Safety Crew accompanies the cyclists along the route and ensures their safety and well being. Crew members are paired and provided with a van complete with energy snacks, water, sunscreen, bicycle tire pumps and bicycle racks. Crew members are located at critical points along the route to provide direction and cheerleading. In case of emergencies, the Road Safety Crew works closely with the Wellness Crew to provide medical assistance. The most significant role of Road Safety is to provide a safe environment for Riders as well as moral support, cheering the cyclists along on the road.
Requirements for Road Safety Crew
• All drivers must have a valid driver’s license
• Ability to drive and/or navigate with maps
• Ability to work within a team or individually
• Be prepared to complete rally average work day of 9 to 10 hours
• Provide emotional and psychological support to fellow team members and Riders – you are encouraged to participate with daily themes and encourage/be cheerleaders throughout the day
• Ability to Clarify route for Riders and identify/report problem areas to Road Safety Crew Leaders
• Ability to Setup and tear-down of own tent daily and when able assist other team members with their tent.
• Available for daily Road Safety meetings during the rally
• Available for a minimum of 2 training sessions rides prior to the rally.
• Must be available for Road Safety Meetings prior to the ride.
Motorcycle Support
Motorcycle support are members of the Road Safety and as such will meet the requirements for Road Safety Crew and in addition will:
• Must provide your own motorcycle
• Accompany Riders throughout the day, including many ‘loops’ of daily route
• Responsible for all daily supplies and costs for motorcycle
• Be prepared (when safe) to ride on bike paths in case of emergencies
• Attend daily morning meetings during ride for information on possible problem areas located by route markers and Road Safety Crew Leaders
• Motorcycles may be marked and as such are ambassadors for the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation along our journey.
• Respond to requests and provide security for riders
• Aid Road Safety Crew in clarifying route
Route Markers
Route Markers are members of Road Safety and as such will meet the requirements for Road Safety Crew and in addition will:
• Be prepared to complete rally average work day of approximately 8:30am to 5:30pm and often begins earlier than rest of rally crew and participants
• Mark the route with painted arrows and flags a day ahead of the Riders (e.g. mark Monday route on Sunday)
• Maintains clear communication throughout rally with Road Safety Crew Leaders of route changes/issues
• Meet every morning with the Road Safety Crew to advise of any ‘problem’ areas for that day (e.g. road conditions, construction, route changes, etc)
• Be physically prepared to get in and out of vehicle repeatedly to mark route
• Must return to Toronto with Crew on Departure Day on Sunday, August 2nd from Montreal
Bike Mechanics
Bike Mechanics are members of the Road Safety and as such will meet the above requirements for Road Safety Crew but have different responsibilities.
We understand that this means giving up a week of work in your short busy season - thank you for your interest! Having said that, this will be the most rewarding week of wrenching you’ll do all summer AND you get a week of fun-in-the-sun instead of locked away in a dark shop!
- Professional mechanics with bike shop experience only please (b/c this is a skilled position which can affect the safety of riders, and since there is not currently industry certification, you will be screened).
- Available after breakfast/before departure each morning to make bike pumps available to riders. Repairs do not happen in the morning before departure.
- Travel in the mechanics’ van throughout the day, stopping at all break points to check for riders with mechanical difficulty.
- Be available by phone (provided) throughout the day to deal with mechanical emergencies as required.
- Set up for repairs at lunch and at the campsite at end of day.
- Be prepared to complete average work day of 12 hours (including travel time).
- Available for a planning meeting/training session prior to the rally.
- Be good with people in a team/event atmosphere. You are encouraged to provide moral/psychological support to the riders you are assisting, and to get involved in theme days, etc.
