Rules of the road

Sharing public roadways is not a right -- it's a privilege. By law, bicycles are classified as vehicles and as such are subject to the same laws. Careless cycling not only creates a bad impression of cyclists in general, it leaves spectators with a negative impression of the Friends For Life Bike Rally.

As we have to get over 200 cyclists of varying degrees of experience to Montreal without injury, we have to take a no-tolerance approach to enforcing these rules. The Road Safety Crew will remove Riders who are endangering themselves and others through careless cycling.

All Riders must sign the Rules Of The Road  Rules Of The Road form on Packing Day before they can join us on the Rally. Please review it carefully!

Riders must follow the designated route and sign-in at the lunch breaks and campsites. It is extremely important that all Riders sign in - it's the only way we can ensure that every Rider has arrived safely at the end of the day.

Alcohol Consumption

The Toronto People With AIDS Foundation does not have a Special Occasions Permit that would enable any involvement in the co-ordination of, or direct supply, sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages to any person during the 2007 Friends For Life Bike Rally.

For this reason, the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation and Friends For Life Bike Rally staff, crew, volunteers, planning team, board members, and team leaders are restricted from facilitating the co-ordination of, or direct supply, sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages to any person during the 2007 Friends For Life Bike Rally.

We are a Green Community

Campground rules

We are staying in public campgrounds so please observe the posted rules pertaining to each campground. All campgrounds must be left the way we found them.

Recycling

Use the designated receptacles for recycling. Please use the plate provided to you and pack your own cutlery and coffee mug -- use them whenever possible to help us minimize unnecessary garbage.

Litter

All garbage must be placed in the appropriate receptacles. Do not litter under any circumstances!

Showers

All of the campsites along the route have shower facilities, however these are limited. Aside from the long wait for a shower, excessive use from 200+ Riders and Crew showering has a negative impact on our environment. We ask that if you do use one of the shower facilities, please keep your shower under five minutes. Please use bio-degradable soap and shampoo.

Injured Rider/Crew policy

Should a Rider or Crew member suffer injury or illness during the event, he/she will be examined by a Nurse and transported to the nearest hospital if necessary for treatment. If the Head Nurse deems a Rider unable to ride for that day, the Rider and his/her bike will be transported to the next campsite. Injured Riders are encouraged to help Crew in camp if they are physically able.

If you must leave the event at any time, we can help you to arrange transportation, but the financial responsibility is yours. You must notify the Friends For Life Bike Rally co-ordinator if you plan to leave.

Safety & Etiquette Policy

Riders must cooperate at all times with event staff, Crew, and local law enforcement. Always maintain a safe and non-disruptive behavior, including no verbal or physical fighting or harassment.

Respect the campsite and other campers. This means quiet after 10:00pm. Don't litter. Use the facilities and toilets provided. Be polite to locals, staff and each other – remember, we have to return next year.

You may not possess or be under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol while riding or driving.

Watch out for the safety of others as well as your own. Obey all traffic laws. Riders must always wear a CPSC-, ANSI, Snell-, or ATSM approved helmet when on their bike. Use of earphones, radios or cell phones while riding is not permitted.

Any adornments on your bicycle must not extend beyond the rear wheel of the bicycle, nor be any wider than shoulder width, so as not to disrupt other riders. At all times, adornments must not obstruct ANY rider's view.

If a Rider disobeys these rules they will be taken off the road, for their own safety and the safety of others, and transported to the next campsite. If unsafe behavior continues, they will not be permitted to finish the ride with us. Return transportation to Toronto will be arranged.
