The Positive Difference you’re making.

Marklando*, a 38-year-old Black gay man hailing from the vibrant island of Jamaica in the Caribbean, carries with him a story of resilience and determination.

In 2006, Marklando’s journey took a significant turn, when he was diagnosed with HIV. Facing his new diagnosis, that in his community, was often regarded as a “batty man”** disease, particularly stigmatizing for those who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+.

Seeking treatment in Jamaica proved to be a challenging ordeal, often experiencing delays in receiving necessary medication. However, his persistence paid off as Marklando eventually gained access to treatment, marking the beginning of his journey towards reclaiming his health and identity.

Despite his best efforts, the lack of support for 2SLGBTQIA+ folk in Jamaica, compounded by his HIV status, led Marklando to make the bold decision to immigrate to Canada in 2022.

Leaving behind the discrimination he faced, Marklando arrived in Canada with only three bottles of HIV medication - unaware that the next stop on his journey would be the most transformational yet - entering PWA.

“Stepping into PWA for the first time felt like entering a new world”

PWA became Marklando’s primary source of support, offering financial assistance, improved access to healthcare and gave Marklando opportunities to shine, helping to run social events like bingo.

Amidst the stress of immigration and acclimating to a new life in Canada, Marklando found solace in therapeutic care offered at PWA, providing him with much-needed respite from life’s challenges.

The “new world” Marklando discovered in PWA has also inspired him to give back. Utilizing his skills in information technology, Marklando supports other Community Members at PWA who are less tech savvy.

Grateful for the safety, validation, and comfort that PWA has provided, Marklando acknowledges the pivotal role PWA plays in his life.

“Without PWA, my journey would have taken a different course”

Marklando and thousands of others who live with HIV and AIDS rely, not only on the services provided at PWA, but also the community thriving within it.

Thank you Friends of Life Bike Rally Donors, Riders, and Crew - your support and dedication ensures Marklando, and so many like him, have an entire Community rallying behind them.

*Marklando’s name has been changed to protect his identity.

**batty man: “Batty” is slang for buttocks. Battyman is a pejorative term for men who have sex with men, as anal sex is seen as the act that defines them.
